Definitions

Renting - is for a short or indeterminate period of time. It can be less than one day, or for as long as the customer wants it to be. The important thing is that the customer can return the rented item and pay for the time he has the equipment. The customer's cost and liability begin and end with the rental period - which the customer controls. Renting sometimes includes a short guaranteed period of time, such as a two-hour or half day minimum, but generally the customer controls the time and the cost of the rental. Renting always includes standard maintenance.

Leasing - involves a contractually agreed upon period of time for which the customer agrees to terms that repay a portion of the purchase price of the equipment leased Some leasing includes maintenance; most does not.

The American Rental Association Guides the Equipment Rental Industry

The American Rental Association (ARA), based in Moline, Ill., is a trade association of more than 7,200 rental business owners and the manufacturers and suppliers of rental equipment. We have members throughout the United States, in Canada and in more than a dozen overseas countries.

The American Rental Association is the structure for independent rental dealers to accomplish goals they couldn't achieve individually. And it's the network for manufacturers to market their products.

Rental dealers and, when appropriate, equipment manufacturers, guide the ARA staff in developing business services and products in four key areas: education and training; advertising and marketing; business development; and government representation.
